Dear Members and Friends of IAKS,
dear Congress Participants,
After the 50th anniversary of IAKS in 2015, we will be celebrating another anniversary this year: the 25th IAKS Congress. Since its first staging in 1969, it has evolved into a world-leading congress for sports and leisure facilities. Attracting speakers from all over the world, it gives participants valuable inspiration for their work. Its linkage with world flagship fair FSB in Cologne makes the IAKS Congress the biennial highlight for the sports and leisure facility industry.
The Congress addresses current topics and trends in sports and leisure facilities. These include, among others, safety, sustainability and economic issues, for both sports stadia and small community facilities. But sports and leisure facilities must not be considered solely in isolation, for they are part of urban development and have an impact on society. Public spaces and multifunctional community centres as locations for the practise of physical activities are thus growing in importance. We are also presenting examples of best practices for different types of sports facility. And technical and architectural themes will also of course be covered.
I wish very much to draw your attention to the Award Gala on 7 November when the presentation of the IOC IPC IAKS architecture awards will be taking place. This commendation of sports and leisure facilities embodying exemplary design and function has developed into the “Oscar” for the industry. Be sure not to miss this attractive occasion!
None of all this would be possible without years of fruitful cooperation with strong partners. I should like to take this opportunity to express my warmest thanks to our partners – the IOC, IPC, GAISF, Koelnmesse and also the German Ministry of the Interior – for their valuable involvement.
I wish you many interesting conversations and exciting findings during this exciting week in Cologne at the IAKS Congress, FSB and the many events taking place in its course. Seize the opportunity and take time for this valuable exchange of expertise – one that is only available every two years. It is of course best if you become a member of IAKS so as to have access in the period between IAKS Congresses to the latest findings and the various benefits of IAKS membership. We would be happy to let you know more at our stand on the exhibition centre boulevard.
I look forward to meeting you personally at this year’s leading event for the industry.
Dr Stefan Kannewischer
